Other General Care & Cleaning Tips
Between cleanings, most jewelry can be maintained with a non-abrasive jewelry cleaner, like our John Atencio Gentle Jewelry Cleaner, or warm soap and water. To clean diamonds, use a mild solution of six parts water to one-part ammonia and apply with a soft bristle brush. Ultrasonic cleaning is not safe for many gemstones, so we advise against this method. Stones such as amethyst, emerald, opal, pearl, peridot, tanzanite, and tourmaline, for example, require special care as they are delicate and easily abraded. Please contact us with any questions regarding your gemstones. (Refer to our Gemstone Cleaning & Care guide.)
We recommend that you examine your John Atencio jewelry regularly to make sure the settings are snug, and the clasps and other connections are secure. Avoid exposing gold jewelry to household bleach, which will quickly cause gold to discolor and possibly disintegrate. Silver tarnishes rapidly when exposed to salty air, swimming pool chlorine and products containing sulfur, such as rubber gloves. To remove tarnish, we recommend a non-abrasive silver polish or regular use of a John Atencio polish cloth.
At the time of purchase, John Atencio silver jewelry is packaged in a fine quality pouch. Between wearing, we recommend that you place your jewelry in its original pouch or another suitably lined box. (Refer to Frequently Asked Jewelry Care Questions below).

Frequently asked questions
Why does jewelry need to be cleaned?
Jewelry and diamonds attract dirt and oils which causes jewelry to dull. As you wear your jewelry, makeup, soap, lotion, and other dirt builds up just like they do on your skin. To remove it from jewelry, you need a specialized formula to regain sparkle.
Can I use dish, DIY, or household cleaners to clean my jewelry?
No, that is not a great idea. Other formulations aren’t specially formulated to clean jewelry and can sometimes be harmful to jewelry. Just as you use different cleaning solutions to clean the floors, dishes, clothing as different surfaces need different cleansers. For this same reason, jewelry cleaning needs a specialized formula to safely clean gemstones and metals.
How often should I clean my jewelry?
Cleaning daily or whenever your jewelry appears dull will ensure a perfect shine. A great tip is to soak the jewelry in the jar at the same time you brush your teeth (1-2 minutes). Once done, you can rinse, dry, and polish your jewelry to keep it clean every day.
Does this replace in-store cleaning?
Our gentle jewelry cleaner does not replace instore professional cleaning and inspection service but is in addition to the offering.
How long does a jar of Gentle Jewelry Cleaner last?
The number of uses per jar varies based on how large the piece of jewelry is and how dirty each piece is. On average, a jar offers roughly 50 uses, which can be 2-6 months on average. Another indicator to replenish a cleaner is when the solution begins to appear very cloudy.
